THE PROCESS

DESIGN

The design process began with a focused exploration of the theme of explosions, using a mind map to outline the project’s direction and inform secondary research. Visual qualities and connotations of explosions were studied through diverse sources, including jewellery, fine art, and film, to inspire material and conceptual development. Iterative testing with materials such as anodised aluminium, casting, and wire techniques was driven by critical evaluation and the integration of research insights. Drawing and painting played a key role in generating energy and momentum, which were translated into 2D and 3D forms, resulting in vibrant, kinetic jewellery designs that reflect the dynamic essence of explosions.

SELECTION

The selection process was inspired by the dynamic movement and rhythm of an aluminium disc spinning on a rod, evoking energy and fluidity that became central to the designs. This motion, combined with the vibrant colors of explosions and their voluminous bursts of beauty, informed the concept of kinetic jewellery. Using anodised aluminium, the designs capture the striking visual impact of erupting colors and seamless movement, creating pieces that celebrate rhythm, energy, and the natural beauty of explosions.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

The craft represents the exhibition pieces from graduate work, showcasing designs that are inspired by volcanic explosions and natural phenomena. These pieces were created on a larger scale, reflecting the dynamic energy, vibrant colours, and kinetic movement of explosions. While the exhibition work highlights the bold, dramatic forms, the jewellery displayed in the shop has been reimagined on a smaller scale, making it more suitable for everyday wear, but still capturing the essence of these natural forces through their colours, tones, shape with maintaining the connection to the larger, energetic concept while being practical for everyday wear.
